Jesús de Miguel died on Tuesday at age 30.
The Spanish soccer player suffered cardiac arrest in a hospital after an on-field collision during a match on Monday.
Spain’s National Police announced an investigation into the incident.
Jesús de Miguel, a soccer player who played for Tenerife’s football club, has died following a tragic mid-game incident.
The athlete collided with FC Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during added time in a second-division match on Monday. De Miguel suffered cardiac arrest after the incident and was taken to a hospital, where he died on Tuesday.
The Associated Press reported that Spain’s National Police had opened an investigation into the incident, as deaths from non-natural causes — even accidents — are subject to investigations in the country.
However, Santa Cruz de Tenerife chief prosecutor José Luis Sánchez-Jáuregui told Spanish outlet EFE that criminal charges were unlikely since the incident occurred during the match.
The match, which was tied 2-2, was abandoned after the incident, and Owono was given a red card.
Rayco García, the largest shareholder for Tenerife’s team, told reporters that de Miguel’s body would be transported to Navahermosa, Toledo, at his family’s request. He also noted that Miguel’s teammates and Tenerife club officials will come together for a “final farewell” to the late player, and fans will have the opportunity to honor de Miguel at a gathering at the club’s stadium on Saturday. “We will all join forces and get through this together,” García said.
The team issued a statement acknowledging de Miguel’s death on Wednesday.
“There are no words of comfort; there is absolutely nothing that can alleviate this feeling overflowing with sadness. We stand alongside his devastated family, alongside his loved ones, alongside all of tinerfeñismo that today weeps for this cruel outcome,” a translation of the statement said. “The family of Jesús de Miguel thanks each and every one of the expressions of support received, and likewise requests, from the heart, the utmost respect for their privacy in these terrible moments.”
Born in Madrid in 1996, de Miguel began his career on the Leganés’ reserves. He played for several clubs in the region before joining the Unionistas de Salamanca in 2021. He then played for Castellón beginning in 2023 and scored 16 goals in his first full season there, which helped the club land its promotion to the second division.
De Miguel joined Tenerife in 2025 on a three-year contract. He scored 11 goals in his first season and helped the club in its promotion from third division to second division.
De Miguel is survived by his wife and daughter, whom he welcomed in 2025.
