Omija’s Tunisian dream ends in disappointment, joins Naibois
Alphonce Omija/HANDOUT

Alphonce Omija’s move to Tunisian giants Étoile Sportive du Sahel promised to be a major step in his career, but financial and administrative challenges ultimately cut short the Harambee Stars defender’s stay in North Africa.

The 23-year-old has since mutually terminated his contract with the Tunisian club and joined Nairobi United as a free agent, bringing an abrupt end to an adventure he had hoped would help him establish himself abroad.

Omija made 15 domestic appearances for Étoile Sportive du Sahel before circumstances forced him to reconsider his future, leaving him disappointed that the opportunity did not unfold as planned.

“It was a big opportunity for me to play in Tunisia, and I went there determined to succeed. Things did not work out the way I had hoped, but I have learned a lot from the experience,” Omija said.

His departure marks a setback for the defender, who had hoped to build on his previous experiences abroad and establish himself at one of Tunisia’s prominent clubs.

Before moving to Tunisia, Omija played for Dhofar Club in Oman, where he won the Oman Cup, before returning to Gor Mahia for the 2024/25 season. His performances also helped him maintain his place in the Harambee Stars setup.

Despite the disappointing outcome in Tunisia, Omija believes the experience has contributed to his development by exposing him to different playing styles and professional demands.

“Playing in different countries exposes you to different styles and demands. I have grown as a player, and I believe the experience I have gained will help me contribute to this team,” he said.

Omija made his senior Harambee Stars debut on June 11, 2024, against Ivory Coast in a 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifier in Lilongwe, Malawi, where Kenya held the African champions to a goalless draw.

He now hopes to rebuild his career at Nairobi United after an unsettled spell in North Africa.

“I am happy to be back in Kenya and ready for the challenge ahead. Nairobi United have their own ambitions, and I want to help the club achieve its targets through hard work and good performances,” he said.

The defender will be expected to strengthen Nairobi United’s central defence as the club pursues its domestic ambitions and continental aspirations.

For Omija, the immediate task is to put the disappointment of Tunisia behind him, regain stability and turn the lessons learned abroad into a fresh start on home soil.
