Vipers show Lavagne the exit door
Denis Lavagne, Vipers head coach

Vipers SC have shown French coach Denis Lavagne the exit door after a disappointing start to the 2026/27 season, with an early CAF Champions League exit and inconsistent domestic results costing him his job barely four months into his tenure.

The Venoms confirmed their separation from the 61-year-old on Saturday, October 24, bringing an abrupt end to a spell that began with high expectations but quickly unravelled under pressure for results.

Lavagne arrived at Kitende with an impressive African football résumé and a clear mission: maintain Vipers’ dominance at home while taking them further in continental competition.

Instead, his tenure was undone by a series of setbacks, starting with a shock 1-0 defeat to newcomers Entebbe UPPC FC at St Mary’s Stadium, Kitende, on the opening day of the Uganda Premier League.

Losing their first league match at home was not the start the defending champions had hoped for, and matters soon worsened on the continental stage.

Vipers’ CAF Champions League campaign ended in disappointment in September after they fell to Mauritanian side FC Nouadhibou on the away-goals rule.

A 1-1 draw at home left the Venoms needing a result in Nouakchott, but they could only manage a goalless stalemate. The outcome condemned them to an early exit before reaching the group stages, dealing a major blow to the club’s continental ambitions.

For a club that had specifically hired Lavagne to make progress in Africa, the elimination was difficult to ignore.

His troubles continued in the league, where a frustrating 1-1 draw against Maroons FC sparked criticism from both supporters and club management.

Lavagne was faulted for adopting an overly cautious approach, deploying five defenders against a side Vipers were expected to beat. The tactical decision raised questions about his game plan and added to the pressure surrounding his position.

Although Vipers sit fifth in the league standings with 11 points from six matches, their record of three wins, two draws and one defeat was not enough to ease concerns over their performances.

The club’s decision reflects the weight of expectations that accompanied Lavagne’s appointment.

Announced on June 30, 2026, the Frenchman officially took charge on July 1, replacing Belgian tactician Ivan Jacky Minnaert on a two-year contract that was due to run until June 30, 2028.

Vipers turned to Lavagne because of his extensive experience and record of winning trophies in African football.

With nearly three decades in management, he had built a reputation as a coach capable of competing at the highest level on the continent.

He guided Cameroonian giants Coton Sport to the CAF Champions League final in 2008 and later reached the CAF Confederation Cup final with Algerian side JS Kabylie.

His trophy cabinet also included four Cameroonian Elite One league titles and a Sudanese league crown with Al-Hilal. He had also managed the Cameroon national team.

Those credentials made him an attractive choice for Vipers, who had enjoyed domestic success under Minnaert but struggled to make a lasting impression in continental competitions.

The club hoped Lavagne would use his experience to break that barrier, guide the team into the Champions League group stages and maintain their grip on Ugandan football.

However, the defeat to UPPC, the elimination by Nouadhibou and the draw against Maroons quickly turned that ambition into frustration.

Lavagne leaves with Vipers fifth in the league, having failed to make the desired impact in the Champions League. Despite the team’s 11-goal difference, the early setbacks proved costly.

His departure leaves Vipers searching for a new direction as they seek to revive their title defence and rebuild their continental ambitions.
