According to a report by BBC Sport on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Sunderland were held to a 1-1 draw by Lech Poznan in their UEFA Europa League encounter.
Sunderland wasted no time in showing their attacking intentions, as Timur Tuterov found the back of the net in the second minute to give the visitors an early advantage. The goal came after Nilson Angulo provided the assist, putting the Black Cats in a good position to take control of the contest.
Lech Poznan tried to respond in front of their home supporters, but Sunderland managed to hold on to their lead throughout the remainder of the first half. The Polish side continued to search for an equaliser, while Kevin Danso received a yellow card in the 41st minute as the hosts struggled to find a way through their opponents' defence.
Sunderland made several changes after the break as they looked to maintain their advantage and bring fresh energy into the game. Granit Xhaka, Habib Diarra, and Nordi Mukiele were among the players replaced in the 62nd minute, with the visitors hoping to keep Lech Poznan from building momentum.
However, the hosts eventually found a way back into the match when substitute Leo Bengtsson scored in the 70th minute to make it 1-1. Bengtsson had only entered the game eight minutes earlier, and his contribution gave Lech Poznan renewed belief as they pushed for a possible winner.
Both teams made further substitutions in the closing stages, but neither side could find another goal before the referee brought the encounter to an end after four minutes of added time. Sunderland will feel disappointed that they could not turn their early advantage into a victory, although they still managed to take a point away from Poland.
Despite the draw, Sunderland climbed to ninth position on the Europa League table with seven points, while Lech Poznan dropped to 32nd place with just one point from their opening three matches.
