A loyal Manchester United supporter was in for a freezing plunge after watching Joshua Zirkzee grab a consolation goal in Como.
The Red Devils have extended their winless run to seven across all competitions, but more importantly, they hit a new low after getting outclassed by the Champions League new boys en route to a 4-1 victory.
This defeat also uncovered some of the internal rifts between the squad and the technical staff, with Bruno Fernandes and Michael Carrick trading barbs in their respective post-match interviews.
Why a Man United fan jumped into the lake Joshua Zirkzee’s goal
While the situation at Man Utd is anything but cheerful, the club’s travelling supporters were too mentally exhausted to show any signs of outrage, explains The Sun journalist Samuel Luckhurst.
Instead, the dozens who remained in the away end until the final whistle opted to entertain themselves with light-hearted chants.
With Man Utd trailing by four goals, some of the fans were chanting: “If Zirkzee scores, we’re in the lake.”
| Zirkzee’s Man Utd Stats | Appearances | Goals | Assists |
| 24/25 | 49 | 7 | 3 |
| 25/26 | 26 | 2 | 1 |
| 26/27* | 7 | 1 | 0 |
| Total | 82 | 10 | 4 |
The Dutchman has been a popular figure among the fanbase, but he hadn’t scored for United in ages, particularly since December last year.
Nevertheless, the 25-year-old was able to control Amad Diallo’s cross with a deft touch before placing his shot past Jean Butez to give the visitors a consolation goal.
Therefore, one United fan decided to keep his word by jumping into the lake despite the cold weather on a rainy night in northern Italy.
Joshua Zirkzee should be a Man Utd starter
Since Carrick’s appointment in January, Zirkzee has been an afterthought at United. Therefore, the Netherlands international was expected to leave in the summer, but a move never materialised.
But with Benjamin Sesko ruled out of action, the former Bologna star is the only natural striker available for Carrick, even if he’s not considered a traditional No.9.
Carrick has been testing Matheus Cunha, Bryan Mbeumo and even Fernandes upfront, but none of these options has paid dividends.
Therefore, one has to wonder what it requires for the 45-year-old to entrust Zirkzee with a starting role. After all, the Dutchman had shown flashes of brilliance in pre-season, as well as positive signs during his brief cameo.
It remains to be seen whether Carrick will finally unleash him from the start in Sunday’s game against Bournemouth, but more importantly, whether the latter will still be in his post for the weekend.
