According to a BBC Sport report published on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Sir Alex Ferguson has named Ryan Giggs as his greatest Premier League player, placing the former Manchester United winger ahead of Cristiano Ronaldo and other celebrated stars he worked with during his managerial career.
Ferguson's choice centres on qualities that defined Giggs' time at Old Trafford: durability, consistency and sustained influence over time. The Welshman collected 13 Premier League titles and remains the competition's leading assist provider, with 162. Those achievements formed part of an extraordinary career spent largely with United.
Ronaldo also enjoyed a hugely successful spell under Ferguson. He scored 103 Premier League goals for the club and was named the league's Player of the Season in both 2007 and 2008. His individual honours and performances have made him a strong candidate for future recognition in the Premier League Hall of Fame.
The Hall of Fame was launched in 2021 and has since recognised 14 current and former players. Early inductees included Thierry Henry and Alan Shearer. Other prominent names, including Harry Kane and Mohamed Salah, are often discussed as potential additions, while Giggs has yet to receive the honour.
His absence has been linked in the BBC report to the fact that he has not officially retired from professional football. The report also raised the possibility that scrutiny of his personal life may have influenced his prospects, although no official explanation for the omission has been provided.
Giggs has previously indicated that induction is not a major concern for him. He said personal accolades were never his priority, explaining that winning games and securing trophies mattered more.
Ferguson's admiration for the Welshman was evident long before this latest assessment. He had described Giggs as one of only four genuinely world-class players he managed at Manchester United and rated him above other players five years before ending his managerial career in 2009.
Explaining why Giggs stands above the rest, Ferguson said: "Nobody can boast the same sort of longevity and consistency." His verdict highlights the value he places on sustained excellence across the Premier League era.
