Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry is reportedly focused on establishing himself at Sporting CP despite struggling for regular playing time, with the possibility of a January return to Stamford Bridge remaining open.
According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, 4 November 2026, Chelsea have an option to recall the 19-year-old winger from his season-long loan when the January transfer window opens.
Derry joined Sporting during the summer after making progress at Chelsea, having impressed for the club's Under-21 side and earned opportunities in the first team last season.
He made his senior debut against Hull in the FA Cup before receiving his first Premier League start against Nottingham Forest in May.
However, his move to Portugal has not gone according to plan, with the teenager making just seven appearances across all competitions this season.
He has played only 133 minutes, recording one assist and failing to score. His limited involvement includes four Portuguese league appearances and two outings in the Champions League.
Derry recently provided an assist in Sporting's 2-1 Allianz Cup victory over Maritimo but was an unused substitute in the club's subsequent two matches.
He also missed the opportunity to feature against Shakhtar Donetsk at Stamford Bridge, where Sporting secured a 1-0 victory.
Despite his lack of playing time, Derry is reportedly determined to fight for his position rather than seek an immediate departure.
The Athletic, as cited by The Chelsea Chronicle, reported that Chelsea have the option to bring him back in January.
However, the report quoted his current position as follows: "Derry’s only thoughts right now are to make his time at Sporting CP a success and to help the team."
Chelsea will therefore have an important decision to make when the transfer window opens, particularly if his playing opportunities do not improve.
While a return to Stamford Bridge remains possible, another loan move to a club where he can secure regular first-team football could also benefit his development.
