According to a report by Mirror Football on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick appeared to have a tense exchange with Matheus Cunha after the club's dramatic 3-2 Champions League victory over Roma on Tuesday night.
Cunha was instrumental in United's comeback at Old Trafford, scoring twice in the closing stages to help the Red Devils recover from a 2-0 deficit and secure a memorable win.
However, the Brazilian's evening ended on a disappointing note after he was sent off in second-half stoppage time.
The forward had already received a yellow card for taking off his shirt while celebrating one of his goals before picking up a second booking for a foul.
Following the final whistle, Cunha attempted to return to the pitch to celebrate with his teammates, but Carrick intervened and directed him towards the dressing room.
The Brazilian appeared unhappy with his manager's decision, leading to speculation about a possible disagreement between the pair.
However, the incident could have been linked to football's disciplinary regulations, with the IFAB Laws of the Game stating that a player who has been sent off must leave the vicinity of the field of play and the technical area.
The rule means a dismissed player cannot return to the pitch, even after the final whistle.
Carrick may therefore have been trying to prevent Cunha from breaching the regulations and potentially facing further disciplinary action.
Despite the sending-off, the United manager was full of praise for the forward's contribution against Roma.
Carrick admitted he was disappointed with how Cunha's evening ended but insisted the Brazilian's performance demonstrated his commitment to the club.
"Disappointed with how it finished, but it just shows how much he cares and he's willing to do when he's in the frame of mind, he's in that mood, and he plays like that," Carrick said.
Cunha also spoke to CBS Sports after the match, describing United's comeback as a special moment despite his dismissal.
"I'm more anxious to do this interview than to play the game, honestly," he said.
Cunha's dismissal means he will miss United's next European fixture through suspension, leaving Carrick without one of his key attacking options.
