Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry was denied an emotional return to Stamford Bridge after spending the entire match on the bench during Sporting CP's 1-0 victory over Shakhtar Donetsk on Tuesday evening.
According to a report by Football London on Wednesday, 4 November, 2026, the 19-year-old winger was unable to feature against the Ukrainian side despite the Champions League fixture being played at his parent club's home ground.
Derry joined Sporting CP on a season-long loan during the summer transfer window after signing a new long-term contract with Chelsea in July, keeping him at Stamford Bridge until 2032.
The Blues viewed the Portuguese club as an ideal destination for the teenager to gain valuable first-team experience and continue his development. However, his loan spell has not gone according to plan so far.
At the time of the report, Derry had managed just one start for Sporting this season, which came in an Allianz Cup fixture against Maritimo last week.
He played 73 minutes before being left as an unused substitute in the subsequent matches against Casa Pia and Shakhtar Donetsk.
The encounter against Shakhtar presented an opportunity for the Chelsea academy graduate to return to familiar surroundings and potentially impress in front of people associated with his parent club.
However, he watched from the bench as Sporting secured an important victory.
Sporting are also preparing for a managerial change, with Paulo Fonseca expected to replace Rui Borges after leaving Lyon. Derry will hope to impress the incoming manager and earn more opportunities in the first team.
Chelsea will equally be monitoring his progress closely before his expected return to Cobham next summer.
The teenager made three senior appearances for the Blues last season, including his Premier League debut under interim head coach Calum McFarlane in May.
Unfortunately, he suffered a head injury following a collision and was stretchered off before being taken to hospital.
Despite his limited opportunities in Portugal, Chelsea remain interested in his development, having demonstrated their confidence in his potential with a contract extension until 2032.
Derry's immediate priority will be securing regular playing time at Sporting, with the coming months potentially important in determining how quickly he can establish himself in Chelsea's first-team plans.
