Super Eagles invitee Mubarak Suleiman has become the first Nigerian teenager to start a UEFA Champions League match since Alex Iwobi did so in March 2016.
According to a report by The Punch on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, the 19-year-old midfielder achieved the feat when he started for Slavia Prague in their 2-2 draw against Fenerbahçe at the Şükrü Saracoğlu Stadium in Istanbul on Tuesday night.
Before Suleiman's appearance, Iwobi was the last Nigerian teenager to start a Champions League match, having featured for Arsenal against Barcelona in the round of 16 in March 2016.
The match against Fenerbahçe was Suleiman's second appearance in the competition. He made his debut against Sabah FK on October 13, when Slavia Prague lost 2-0 in Azerbaijan.
Suleiman put in a decent performance against the Turkish side, providing two key passes and completing six accurate passes into the final third. He was replaced by Pavel Kacor in the 85th minute.
Slavia Prague had to fight back after falling two goals behind in the opening stages of the encounter. Oğuz Aydın and Mason Greenwood scored for Fenerbahçe within the first 11 minutes to give the hosts an early advantage.
Lukas Provod pulled one goal back for Slavia Prague in the 15th minute after Matteo Guendouzi misplaced a pass.
The visitors continued their fight for an equaliser and eventually found it in the 90th minute when Kacor scored with an acrobatic volley to make it 2-2.
Nigerian forward Emmanuel Ayaosi supplied the cross for the equaliser, which also gave the 20-year-old Kacor his first senior goal for Slavia Prague.
Suleiman has contributed one goal and one assist in eight appearances across all competitions this season.
The midfielder was also expected to feature for the Super Eagles in their international friendly against Russia but withdrew from the squad before the match.
His Champions League milestone adds to his growing experience at club level as he continues to work towards establishing himself in European football and earning further opportunities with the Nigerian national team.
