According to a report by BBC Sport on Sunday, November 1, 2026, Arsenal Women were forced to settle for a 1-1 draw against Aston Villa after Alessia Russo scored a late equaliser to cancel out Chasity Grant’s first-half goal.
The Gunners enjoyed a promising start and created several opportunities to take the lead. Caitlin Foord, Georgia Stanway and Taylor Hinds all tested Villa goalkeeper Akane Okuma, but the visitors remained disciplined defensively and managed to keep Arsenal from finding an early breakthrough.
Despite being under pressure, Aston Villa took the lead in the 25th minute. Lynn Wilms provided the assist, setting up Grant to fire a confident finish from the right side of the penalty area and give the visitors a surprise advantage.
Arsenal immediately increased their efforts to get back into the game, but Okuma continued to frustrate their attacking players with a series of important saves. Géraldine Reuteler and Stanway threatened the Villa goal, while Russo also had difficulty converting her opportunities before the interval.
Looking for a response, Arsenal made two substitutions at half-time, bringing on Emily Fox and Lisa Baum. The changes provided additional energy as the hosts continued to dominate possession and search for an equaliser.
Villa, however, remained organised and determined to protect their lead. Baum tested Okuma, while Foord and Stanway also created dangerous situations, but the goalkeeper received excellent support from her defenders.
Arsenal made further changes as the match progressed, increasing their attacking pressure in the closing stages. Their persistence eventually produced a breakthrough in the 85th minute.
Stina Blackstenius, who had recently entered the game, delivered an excellent cross into the penalty area, allowing Russo to rise and direct a close-range header into the net to make it 1-1.
The Gunners continued pushing for a winner, with Russo and Stanway both presented with late opportunities. However, Aston Villa stood firm during the closing minutes and prevented Arsenal from completing the comeback.
The final whistle confirmed a 1-1 draw, with Villa earning a valuable point away from home while Arsenal were left to rue the chances they failed to convert despite their late response.
