According to a report by The Chelsea Chronicle on Sunday, 1 November 2026, Romeo Lavia has revealed that Chelsea players are pleased with Mike Penders' progress after the goalkeeper delivered an impressive performance in their 2-0 victory over Manchester United.
Lavia disclosed that Penders' improvement has been a regular topic of discussion among teammates at the club's training ground.
The Belgian goalkeeper has faced pressure since being handed an opportunity following Emi Martinez's injury.
Despite making a costly mistake against Tottenham Hotspur, Penders responded positively against Manchester United at Stamford Bridge.
The 21-year-old made three important saves to help Chelsea secure their second Premier League clean sheet of the season.
His standout moment came when he produced an excellent fingertip save to push Bryan Mbeumo's powerful effort onto the crossbar.
The intervention demonstrated his impressive reflexes and physical presence, with the 6ft 7in goalkeeper preventing United from reducing the deficit.
Speaking after the match, Lavia praised Penders and confirmed that his development had attracted attention within the Chelsea dressing room.
The midfielder also indicated that the players were encouraged by the goalkeeper's progress after monitoring his performances in training.
Penders' overall statistics further highlighted his contribution against United. He completed 19 of his 25 passes and recorded a 40 per cent success rate with long balls, completing four out of 10 attempts.
Although Manchester United goalkeeper Senne Lammens made eight saves compared to Penders' three, the Chelsea youngster showed composure and confidence when called upon.
Penders' performance will provide Xabi Alonso with encouragement as Chelsea continue to navigate Martinez's absence.
His latest display also strengthens his case to remain the club's first-choice goalkeeper while the Argentine recovers.
