According to a report by Football London on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Chelsea are monitoring Nico Paz as they consider a potential move for the Argentine attacking midfielder, who has been tipped by goalkeeper Emi Martinez to become his country’s next number 10 following Lionel Messi’s international retirement.
Messi’s decision to end his international career has sparked discussions among Argentina supporters about who could take over the responsibility of wearing the famous number 10 shirt and leading the national team in the coming years.
Paz has already demonstrated his quality at international level, playing a key role in Argentina’s 3-0 win over Benin. The Como midfielder scored once and registered two assists for Messi during the match, further highlighting his attacking abilities.
The 6ft 1in youngster has continued to impress with his performances in Italian football, showcasing excellent technique, creativity and a strong goalscoring instinct. Although his physical attributes differ considerably from those of Messi, his playing qualities have made him an exciting prospect for the future.
His growing reputation received another significant boost on Wednesday when he scored twice in Como’s commanding 4-1 Champions League triumph over Manchester United. That performance has reportedly attracted further attention from several European clubs, with Chelsea among those keeping a close eye on his development.
According to reports, Chelsea have sent scouts to assess Paz’s performances, while the club's ownership is believed to be open to making a substantial financial commitment to bring him to Stamford Bridge.
Martinez has also indicated that he sees considerable potential in his compatriot. After Paz uploaded an Instagram post following Argentina’s 4-0 victory over Bolivia, the Chelsea goalkeeper responded by asking, “New Number 10?”
The comment fuelled speculation that Martinez considers Paz a potential successor to Messi in Argentina’s iconic shirt. Despite the growing expectations surrounding him, Paz has previously acknowledged that he remains uncertain about replacing the legendary forward in that position.
Chelsea have reportedly shown interest in Paz before, having previously explored the possibility of signing the former Real Madrid academy prospect. However, any attempt to secure his services could be complicated by the interest of other clubs and Real Madrid’s contractual advantage.
The Spanish giants reportedly possess a buyback clause worth £70 million, which could allow them to re-sign Paz and bring him back to the Santiago Bernabeu if they choose to activate the option.
Since moving from Real Madrid to Como, Paz has established himself as one of the most promising young attacking midfielders in European football. His development under Cesc Fabregas has been particularly impressive, with his performances demonstrating both creativity and consistent attacking output.
Across 85 appearances in all competitions over two seasons, the Argentine has accumulated 45 goal contributions, underlining his importance to Como and his continued progress since leaving the Spanish capital.
Paz has maintained that impressive form this season, scoring four goals and providing five assists in 10 appearances. His two-goal display against Manchester United further demonstrated his ability to influence important matches. Meanwhile, he has registered four goals in 14 appearances for Argentina.
Chelsea are expected to continue assessing the midfielder as they explore potential additions to their squad. With his technical ability, impressive statistics and increasing prominence in international football, Paz could become an attractive signing for the Premier League side as they look to strengthen their attacking options.
