Nigerian forward Taiwo Awoniyi has received the Beyond the Pitch Award at the 2026 Best of Africa Awards for his charity work and efforts to help develop football in Nigeria.
Presented alongside the Professional Footballers’ Association, the prize honours players whose influence extends beyond their on-field performances and delivers a positive social impact.
Awoniyi’s award reflected his work to support local football projects, encourage emerging talent and open pathways for young Nigerians hoping to pursue the game professionally.
The Coventry City player was joined at the ceremony by his wife, Taiwo, his brother Victor Awoniyi, other family members, friends and representatives from his team.
England international Michelle Agyemang was named the recipient of the women’s Beyond the Pitch Award.
Founded in 2011, the Best of Africa Awards recognise people of African heritage for achievements in sport, entertainment, business and other fields. Leadership, charitable activity and service to communities are central to the awards’ focus.
Several prominent football figures have previously been celebrated. Alex Iwobi collected the Community Action Award in 2018, while Mohamed Salah was named Player of the Year in the same year.
Former Ivory Coast captain Yaya Touré and Kenya international Victor Wanyama have also been among the honourees.
Awoniyi’s latest accolade underlines the increasing role footballers can play in supporting communities and motivating the next generation through their public platforms.
