According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday November 4, 2026, Aston Villa manager Unai Emery has identified the costly mistakes that contributed to his team's 3-0 defeat against Barcelona in the UEFA Champions League.
The Spanish tactician admitted that his players failed to take their clear goalscoring opportunities and made several defensive errors that Barcelona punished during the encounter.
Despite the disappointing result, Emery believes Aston Villa showed enough quality to compete against the Catalan giants, insisting that the experience should help his team improve.
Speaking after the match, as quoted by Mundo Deportivo, Emery expressed his disappointment but explained that the defeat could contribute to Villa's development.
“We’re not happy with the result either, even though it doesn’t have any immediate consequences. We’re building the team and this should help us continue with that process.
“We need to learn, draw conclusions and find ways to compete better,” he said.
The former Arsenal manager particularly criticised his team's attempts to play out from the back, explaining that Barcelona took advantage of their mistakes to create dangerous opportunities.
“We’ve had clear chances to score, but we haven’t taken them. Barcelona capitalised on some of our mistakes when bringing the ball out of defence,” Emery added.
The Aston Villa boss also believes his team had opportunities to make the contest more competitive, particularly after Barcelona scored the opening goal.
According to Emery, Villa could have changed the direction of the match if they had converted their chances and found an equaliser.
“We had clear chances after the 1-0. If we’d equalised, the match would have been back on,” he explained.
Emery further revealed that he remained optimistic even after Barcelona doubled their advantage, but admitted that the third goal effectively ended his team's chances of recovering.
“I remained optimistic, even at 2-0. With the third goal, the match was effectively over as far as our chances were concerned,” he concluded.
Meanwhile, Emery acknowledged Barcelona's quality, describing the Spanish giants as one of the favourites to win the Champions League this season.
The Aston Villa manager insisted that competing against Europe's strongest teams remains important to his club's ambitions.
The defeat also extended Emery's difficult record against Barcelona. In 31 meetings with the Catalan club, the Spaniard has recorded 22 defeats, six draws and just three victories.
Nevertheless, the Villa manager will hope his players learn from the mistakes that proved costly against Hansi Flick's side as they continue their campaign.
