Barcelona keen on Ajax’s Youri Baas as defensive search continues

Barcelona are reportedly considering a move for Ajax defender Youri Baas as they continue to explore options to strengthen their defence ahead of future transfer windows.

According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, the 23-year-old Dutchman has attracted the attention of the Catalan giants, who are impressed by his versatility, physical attributes and growing experience at the highest level.

Barcelona believe Baas could be a suitable addition to manager Hansi Flick’s squad as the club looks to improve the quality and depth of its defensive department.

The Ajax defender has established himself as an important figure at his club and has also developed into one of the team’s leaders. His consistent performances have reportedly brought him closer to earning a place in the Netherlands national team.

Baas is being tipped to make his international debut following Xavi Hernandez’s appointment as manager of the Dutch national side.

Barcelona’s interest comes as Flick continues to assess potential defensive reinforcements capable of handling the demands of competing in both La Liga and European competitions.

The Dutchman’s ability to operate in different defensive positions is considered one of his major strengths, while his height and physical presence could also address some of Barcelona’s weaknesses.

The Spanish champions have occasionally struggled against physically imposing opponents, particularly when dealing with aerial threats and set-pieces. Baas is viewed as a player who could help improve the team’s effectiveness in those situations.

However, the Ajax star is not the only defender on Barcelona’s radar. The report also identifies Ruud Nijstad, Arthur Dias, Piero Hincapie and Vitor Reis as potential options being monitored by the club.

Barcelona are therefore assessing several candidates before deciding which player would best meet Flick’s requirements.

For now, their interest in Baas remains at the monitoring stage, with no official offer submitted to Ajax and no agreement reached over a potential transfer.

Nevertheless, the 23-year-old could emerge as an attractive option as Barcelona continue planning for the future of their defence.
