According to a report by ESPN on Thursday, November 5, 2026, the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) has announced plans to organise a special farewell ceremony for Cristiano Ronaldo following his decision to retire from international football after more than two decades representing Portugal.
The federation paid tribute to the legendary forward through a message published on its official X account, acknowledging his remarkable contributions and achievements with the national team.
The FPF also assured the 41-year-old that his relationship with Portuguese football would remain special despite his departure from international competition. In its message, the federation stated, "This will always be your home."
Ronaldo's retirement brings an end to an extraordinary international career that began with his senior debut for Portugal in 2003. During his time with the national team, he established himself as one of the most influential players in the country's football history.
The Al-Nassr forward leaves behind an impressive international record of 146 goals in 234 appearances. These statistics make him Portugal's all-time leading goalscorer and the highest-scoring player in men's international football.
One of the most memorable achievements of his career came in 2016 when he captained Portugal to victory at the European Championship in France. The historic triumph marked the country's first major European Championship title.
Ronaldo also played an important role in Portugal's UEFA Nations League successes in 2019 and 2025, adding further international silverware to his collection.
Throughout his career, the former Manchester United and Real Madrid attacker became a source of inspiration for younger Portuguese footballers through his performances, leadership and remarkable consistency at the highest level.
Although he has ended his international career, Ronaldo is expected to continue playing for Saudi Arabian club Al-Nassr, where he remains focused on achieving further milestones.
Another major ambition for the forward is reaching 1,000 official career goals. According to figures cited by ESPN, he has scored 985 goals, leaving him just 15 away from achieving the historic target.
The proposed farewell ceremony will give the Portuguese Football Federation an opportunity to celebrate his contributions and formally recognise his years of service to the national team.
His international retirement closes an important chapter in Portuguese football, but his records, achievements and influence are expected to remain part of the country's sporting legacy for generations.
