According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Thursday October 22, 2026, Manchester United have decided against punishing Bruno Fernandes or stripping him of the captaincy following his explosive interview after the club's 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como.
The Portuguese midfielder openly questioned Michael Carrick's tactical decisions, suggesting that United failed to press their opponents aggressively enough and allowed the Italian side too much time and space on the ball.
Fernandes argued that the team needed to show greater bravery under pressure and take more risks by pressing higher up the pitch. His comments have sparked debate over whether the United captain went too far by publicly questioning the manager and his coaching staff.
However, reports indicate that Fernandes will retain the captain's armband and is unlikely to face any punishment from the club. Although there is reportedly some internal disappointment over his remarks, United appear to recognise the frustration behind his comments following such a disappointing performance.
The incident has added further pressure on Carrick, whose position is already under scrutiny after a poor run of results. With United struggling to find consistency, the disagreement has raised questions about the relationship between the manager and some of his senior players.
Carrick had criticised his players for their lack of application after the defeat, while Fernandes pointed towards tactical decisions as part of the problem. The contrasting assessments have fuelled discussions about where responsibility for the team's struggles truly lies.
United must now focus on their upcoming Premier League fixture against Bournemouth, with Carrick hoping his players can deliver a stronger performance and restore confidence.
