According to a report by Metro on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has addressed criticism from captain Bruno Fernandes following the club’s 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como in Italy.
The result has intensified concerns over United’s current form, with the Red Devils now having gone seven consecutive games without a win in all competitions.
After the match, Fernandes questioned aspects of the team’s tactical approach, particularly its defensive structure and pressing strategy. The Portuguese midfielder suggested that United’s reluctance to apply consistent man-to-man pressure had given Como too much freedom to exploit spaces and create scoring opportunities.
Fernandes explained that the coaching staff had asked the players to follow a different pressing system, which sometimes allowed opponents more time and room on the ball before United attempted to win possession back.
When asked whether the tactical instructions had contributed to the defeat, the United captain indicated that Carrick and his coaching team were responsible for assessing those decisions.
Carrick, however, provided a different perspective in his response, revealing that United had switched to a more aggressive man-to-man pressing approach during the second half. Despite the adjustment, the Premier League side continued to concede goals.
The manager’s comments suggested that the defeat could not be attributed solely to the original tactical setup. He stressed that players must also take responsibility for their performances, regardless of the system they are instructed to follow.
Carrick reportedly highlighted the importance of greater determination, intelligent movement and defensive commitment, arguing that tactical plans alone cannot guarantee positive results.
He also called for improved intensity in both attacking and defensive situations, indicating that his players must do more to compete effectively against difficult opponents.
Meanwhile, Como capitalised on Manchester United’s defensive shortcomings to secure an impressive victory. Nico Paz was the standout performer, scoring twice and providing an assist as the Italian side repeatedly troubled the visitors.
Anastasios Douvikas and Jacobo Ramón also got on the scoresheet, while Joshua Zirkzee managed a late consolation goal for United.
The differing reactions from Carrick and Fernandes have drawn attention to the challenges facing Manchester United, particularly questions surrounding tactical decisions, communication between the coaching staff and players, and individual accountability.
Although both men will be eager to see the team improve, their comments reflect the growing frustration surrounding United’s recent performances.
Carrick now faces mounting pressure to turn the situation around, restore confidence within the squad and end the club’s winless run. The team’s upcoming matches could be crucial in determining whether United can recover from their disappointing European campaign and improve their results.
