According to a report by BBC Sport on Tuesday October 20, 2026, Liverpool claimed a dramatic 4-3 victory over Villarreal in their UEFA Champions League encounter at Anfield after recovering from a two-goal deficit to secure all three points.
Villarreal made an impressive start to the contest and stunned the home supporters by opening the scoring in the fourth minute. Georges Mikautadze capitalised on an error by Virgil van Dijk to put the Spanish side in front, giving Liverpool an early problem to solve.
The visitors continued to apply pressure and extended their advantage in the 29th minute. Sergi Cardona found the back of the net after Nathan Saliba supplied the assist, leaving Liverpool trailing 2-0 and facing the possibility of a disappointing result on their home ground.
However, Liverpool gradually regained their composure and began to create more opportunities as they searched for a way back into the match. Their efforts produced a breakthrough in the 36th minute when Alexis Mac Allister connected with Konstantinos Tsimikas' corner and headed the ball into the net to reduce the deficit.
The goal gave Liverpool renewed confidence, and they continued attacking in search of an equaliser before the interval. Their persistence eventually paid off during stoppage time, when Ronald Araujo rose above the Villarreal defence to convert a cross from Rio Ngumoha. The goal brought the score to 2-2 and ensured that both teams entered the break on level terms.
Liverpool carried their momentum into the second half and completed their comeback in the 65th minute. Mac Allister scored his second goal of the evening with a close-range finish after another impressive contribution from Ngumoha. The goal turned the match around and put the Premier League side ahead for the first time.
The hosts strengthened their position four minutes later when Florian Wirtz found the net with a left-footed effort. Cody Gakpo provided the assist, helping Liverpool establish a two-goal advantage and putting additional pressure on Villarreal as the game approached its closing stages.
Despite falling behind, Villarreal continued to fight and managed to make the contest tense once again. Tani Oluwaseyi scored in the 87th minute after receiving a pass from Ayoze Perez, reducing Liverpool's advantage to just one goal.
The visitors pushed forward in the closing minutes in an attempt to find another equaliser, but Liverpool successfully protected their lead until the final whistle. The result completed an entertaining encounter in which both sides demonstrated their attacking quality.
Following the victory, Liverpool moved to second place in the UEFA Champions League standings with nine points, level with Paris Saint-Germain at the top of the table. Villarreal, meanwhile, fell to 19th position after failing to secure any points from the encounter.
Liverpool's comeback victory could prove important in their efforts to finish among the leading teams in the league phase, while Villarreal will need to improve their results in subsequent fixtures to strengthen their position in the competition.
