According to a post published on the Super Falcons’ official X account on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos headed into half-time with a 1-0 lead over Japan in the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Rabat, Morocco.
Awawu Bashiru found the breakthrough towards the end of the first half, giving the Nigerian side an important advantage and bringing them closer to a historic achievement.
The goal followed an attacking move by the Flamingos, which ended with Bashiru showing composure to put the ball into the net. Her effort gave Nigeria the lead after a competitive opening 45 minutes against their Japanese opponents.
The half-time advantage was particularly significant for the young Nigerian team, who were making their first appearance in the final of the competition. Their performance against Japan had raised hopes among supporters that they could finish their impressive campaign by lifting the trophy.
Several Nigerian players also contributed to the team’s display. Oluebube Umejiaku caused problems for Japan’s defence with her movement and forward runs, while Queen Joseph provided defensive stability and supported the team whenever they moved forward.
Nigeria’s attacking organisation and ability to create opportunities helped them put Japan under pressure during the first half. However, with another 45 minutes left to play, the Flamingos still had work to do to secure the championship.
The team had already attracted attention for their recovery following an opening defeat in the tournament, going on to record a series of positive results to reach the final.
Meanwhile, Nigerian football supporters took to social media to celebrate Bashiru’s goal, send messages of encouragement and express their pride in the team’s performance.
A victory over Japan would make Nigeria the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup, representing a major milestone for the country and women’s football across the continent.
