According to a post by Fabrizio Romano on X on Saturday, November 7, 2026, José Mourinho has paid tribute to Sir Alex Ferguson, describing the legendary Scottish manager as the embodiment of Manchester United.
Mourinho made the remarks as part of a special tribute video released by Manchester United to mark the 40th anniversary of Ferguson’s appointment at Old Trafford.
The Portuguese manager, who previously coached United between 2016 and 2018, expressed his admiration for Ferguson’s influence on football managers and the standards he established during his remarkable career.
“For me, he was always our boss, the boss of every coach,” Mourinho said.
He further emphasised the close connection between Ferguson and Manchester United, suggesting that the former manager represents the identity and history of the English club.
“I think he is Manchester United,” Mourinho added.
Ferguson arrived at Old Trafford on November 6, 1986, beginning a managerial reign that lasted 26 years before his retirement in 2013.
During that period, he transformed United into one of the most successful clubs in European football, winning 13 Premier League titles and two UEFA Champions League trophies.
His overall trophy collection at the club included 38 major honours, making him one of the most decorated managers in football history.
Mourinho was not the only former United figure involved in the anniversary tribute. Cristiano Ronaldo, David Beckham, Wayne Rooney, Rio Ferdinand, Bryan Robson and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer also shared their memories of Ferguson.
Ronaldo particularly praised the Scot for his role in developing young footballers, recalling how Ferguson helped him grow during his first spell at Manchester United.
The tribute highlighted Ferguson’s influence beyond trophies, with former players and coaches reflecting on his leadership, discipline and lasting contribution to the club.
Forty years after his appointment, Ferguson remains closely associated with Manchester United, with Mourinho's description capturing the respect he continues to command among football's leading figures.
