Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel has criticised Michael Carrick's substitutions during the club's Premier League defeat to Chelsea, while praising the manager for making more effective changes in their Champions League encounter against AS Roma.
According to a report by Daily Post on Wednesday, November 4, 2026, Schmeichel shared his assessment after Manchester United secured a 3-2 victory over Roma at Old Trafford on Tuesday night.
United struggled during the opening stages of the encounter, conceding two goals within the first 17 minutes. The early setback placed Carrick under pressure, especially following the team's disappointing results in recent matches.
However, the manager's substitutions helped change the direction of the game, allowing United to recover and secure an important victory. Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty, while Matheus Cunha scored twice to complete the comeback.
Speaking on CBS Sports Golazo, Schmeichel compared Carrick's decisions against Roma with the substitutions he made during the previous Premier League match against Chelsea.
The former goalkeeper explained that the changes introduced against Chelsea failed to produce the expected improvement, unlike the impact of the players brought on against the Italian side.
“Michael on Saturday vs. Chelsea made some substitutions that unfortunately did not have any kind of impact on the game,” Schmeichel said.
He subsequently praised Carrick for making more effective decisions against Roma, identifying Youri Tielemans, Lisandro Martínez, Shea Lacey, Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount as players whose introductions contributed to the team's improved performance.
“Today, he made substitutions \[Youri Tielemans, Lisandro Martínez, Shea Lacey, Matthijs de Ligt and Mason Mount\] that made an impact,” he added.
Schmeichel's comments highlighted the importance of making substitutions that can immediately influence a team's performance, particularly when facing difficult situations during important matches.
The victory also provided some encouragement for Carrick following questions about his position and Manchester United's recent performances.
United will now shift their attention to their upcoming Premier League fixture against Aston Villa this weekend, as they look to build on their Champions League result.
