According to a report by Football London on Friday, October 23, 2026, Arsenal midfielder Martin Zubimendi is reportedly considering an early departure from the Emirates Stadium, with Real Madrid emerging as a potential destination ahead of the January transfer window.
The Spanish midfielder joined Arsenal from Real Sociedad in the summer of 2025 for approximately £60 million. His arrival followed strong competition from several major European clubs, including Liverpool and Real Madrid, who were also interested in securing his services.
Zubimendi initially impressed at Arsenal with his technical ability, composure on the ball and intelligence in controlling the midfield. However, his influence reportedly diminished towards the end of last season, raising questions about his position in Mikel Arteta's preferred starting lineup.
The situation has seemingly become more challenging during the current campaign, with Myles Lewis-Skelly receiving opportunities ahead of the experienced midfielder. Zubimendi has reportedly managed only 197 minutes across eight appearances in all competitions this season, increasing speculation about his satisfaction with his current role.
Reports cited by Football365, referencing Spanish outlet Nacional, claim that the 27-year-old wants his representatives to investigate the possibility of arranging a move to Real Madrid as soon as possible.
Nevertheless, several obstacles could complicate any potential transfer. Real Madrid would first need to demonstrate genuine interest, while Arsenal would have to decide whether allowing the midfielder to leave halfway through the season would benefit their sporting ambitions.
Despite the uncertainty, football analyst Andy Brassell believes Arsenal should remain patient and give the Spaniard further opportunities to establish himself in English football.
"I think he could still be a success in the Premier League," Brassell told talkSPORT, expressing confidence in the midfielder's ability to improve his performances.
Brassell also emphasised the importance of maintaining sufficient squad depth, particularly as Arsenal continue competing across multiple competitions. He believes Zubimendi could prove valuable during a demanding season when injuries, fatigue and fixture congestion could affect the team's midfield options.
The analyst further pointed to the player's experience with Spain, highlighting his international pedigree and reputation as a reliable midfield option. Losing a player with such qualities could leave Arsenal with fewer alternatives as the campaign progresses.
For now, Zubimendi's future remains uncertain, with a possible January transfer depending on Real Madrid's intentions and Arsenal's willingness to negotiate. The Gunners must carefully assess his reported desire to leave against their need for quality and depth before making a final decision.
