Flick’s bold decision in Barcelona’s defeat to PSG sends a message about La Masia

According to a report by Barca Universal on Wednesday October 21, 2026, Barcelona may have suffered their first defeat of the season against Paris Saint-Germain, but Hansi Flick’s team selection delivered a significant message about the club’s faith in its famous La Masia academy.

According to reports, as reported by Barca Universal, Flick started four 19-year-olds in Barcelona’s Champions League encounter against PSG on Tuesday, demonstrating his willingness to trust young talents against some of the strongest teams in European football.

Lamine Yamal, Pau Cubarsi, Marc Bernal and Xavi Espart all featured in the starting lineup at the Parc des Princes, with the four players born in 2007.

The decision was particularly notable given the quality of the opposition. PSG, who had won the previous two editions of the Champions League according to the report, presented a demanding test for Barcelona, yet Flick did not hesitate to give the club’s young players important responsibilities.

Although Barcelona ultimately suffered a disappointing defeat, the German coach’s selection highlighted the importance of youth development in his plans for the team.

The loss ended Barcelona’s run of 11 consecutive victories, which included nine wins in La Liga and two in the Champions League. However, the result did not change the broader message behind Flick’s decision to trust the next generation.

Barcelona have long relied on La Masia to develop players capable of representing the first team, and Flick’s approach suggests that the academy remains an important part of the club’s future.

Yamal and Cubarsi have already established themselves as key figures in Barcelona’s setup. Both youngsters have earned significant responsibilities despite their age and continue to attract attention for their performances at club and international level.

Their development demonstrates how quickly talented academy graduates can become important members of the senior squad when given the right opportunities.

Marc Bernal’s involvement also carried particular significance. The midfielder has been working to rebuild his career after suffering a serious knee injury during his first campaign under Flick.

His progress has not been straightforward, especially with increased competition for places in Barcelona’s midfield following Rodri’s arrival. Nevertheless, his inclusion against PSG showed that he remains part of Flick’s plans as he continues his recovery and development.

Xavi Espart was another notable inclusion in the starting lineup. Unlike Yamal and Cubarsi, who have already established themselves at senior level, Espart is still looking to make his breakthrough in the first team.

According to the report, the young defender made an impression against PSG, scoring Barcelona’s opening goal and repeatedly challenging Khvicha Kvaratskhelia in individual encounters.

His performance provided encouragement for a player hoping to earn more opportunities under Flick. It also underlined the potential benefits of giving academy graduates meaningful minutes in high-pressure matches rather than restricting them to less demanding fixtures.

Barcelona’s approach stood out when compared with the other teams involved in Tuesday’s Champions League matches. According to the report, no other side in that round’s fixtures started four players of the same age in its lineup.

Several clubs also gave young players opportunities, but Flick’s decision to trust four teenagers from the same generation was a particularly striking example of confidence in youth.
