According to a report by The Guardian on Sunday November 1, 2026, Manchester United have decided to keep Michael Carrick in charge for Tuesday's Champions League clash against Roma despite growing pressure following their disappointing defeat to Chelsea.
The Red Devils suffered a 2-0 loss at Stamford Bridge on Saturday, extending their winless run to nine matches across all competitions.
The result left United 17th in the Premier League table, above the relegation zone only on goal difference, increasing uncertainty surrounding Carrick's future.
There had been strong speculation that the former midfielder could be dismissed following the 3-0 defeat to Bournemouth. However, discussions between director of football Jason Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada resulted in the decision to retain him for now.
According to The Guardian's Jamie Jackson, Carrick is expected to remain in the dugout for the visit of Roma and the subsequent Premier League meeting with Aston Villa on November 8.
United are reportedly planning to reassess his position during the international break, meaning the next two matches could prove crucial to his future at Old Trafford.
Meanwhile, Wilcox has already identified Eddie Howe as his preferred candidate should the club decide to make a managerial change.
The former Newcastle United manager is reportedly open to taking charge at Old Trafford, with contact already made between the parties.
However, United would reportedly need to pay around £3 million in compensation to Newcastle because of the circumstances surrounding Howe's departure before the start of the season.
Julian Nagelsmann is another name under consideration, with the German enjoying strong support from United's director of recruitment, Christopher Vivell, following their previous working relationship at RB Leipzig.
Howe was also reportedly recommended to Manchester United by former sporting director Dan Ashworth when the club were searching for Erik ten Hag's replacement in 2024.
For now, Carrick retains the opportunity to improve United's fortunes, but the club's reported interest in Howe suggests that his long-term future remains uncertain.
