According to a report by Flashscore on Friday, October 23, 2026, Nigeria’s Flamingos have secured qualification for the round of 16 at the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after defeating defending champions North Korea 3-1 in their final Group B fixture.
The Nigerian youngsters delivered an impressive performance at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat, Morocco, scoring twice before the interval and adding another goal in the second half to claim their second victory of the tournament.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi gave Nigeria the lead in the 15th minute after receiving a well-timed pass from Mary Dunstan. Her early strike provided the Flamingos with a strong start and increased their confidence against the reigning champions.
Nigeria continued to apply pressure on their opponents, creating attacking opportunities and testing the North Korean defence. Their persistence produced another goal in the 38th minute when Oluebube Umejiaku converted an assist from Tosin Rafiu to extend the advantage to 2-0.
The Flamingos maintained their two-goal cushion until half-time, leaving North Korea with considerable work to do in the second period. The defending champions had entered the match following victories over Puerto Rico and Poland in their opening group fixtures.
However, Nigeria’s disciplined defensive organisation and clinical finishing prevented the Asian side from gaining control of the contest. After the restart, the Nigerian team continued to push forward, determined to strengthen their advantage and secure all three points.
Their efforts paid off in the 58th minute when Kanyinsola Yusuf scored the third goal, putting Nigeria firmly in control at 3-0. The strike further increased the pressure on North Korea, who struggled to find a way back into the match.
North Korea eventually reduced the deficit in the 82nd minute through Yu Jong-Hyang, who scored to make it 3-1. Despite the late response, the Flamingos remained composed and successfully defended their lead until the final whistle.
The victory represents a significant turnaround for Nigeria, who opened their campaign with a narrow 2-1 defeat against Poland before responding with a 2-0 triumph over Puerto Rico.
Finishing second in Group B behind North Korea, the Flamingos have now progressed to the knockout stage of the competition. Their convincing victory over the defending champions will provide a major confidence boost as they prepare for the challenges ahead in the round of 16.
