Former Arsenal Star Announces Retirement from Football at 38

According to a report by London Evening Standard on Thursday November 5, 2026, Former Arsenal goalkeeper David Ospina has officially announced his retirement from professional football at the age of 38, bringing an end to a career that included spells in England, Italy, France and Saudi Arabia.

The Colombian shot-stopper confirmed his decision on Wednesday through a message shared on his social media account. He expressed gratitude for his time in football while reflecting on the journey that took him across several countries and competitions.

"I say to football, thank you! I will not give it up… but I am grateful! It has been a wonderful journey! From now on, I will go wherever my smile takes me," Ospina wrote.

The experienced goalkeeper enjoyed a career spanning more than two decades. He made over 600 appearances at club and international level, including 131 outings for Colombia.

His international record places him among the country's most-capped footballers. He shares the record with former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder James Rodriguez.

Ospina began his European adventure at Nice, where he spent six years between 2008 and 2014. His impressive performances earned him a move to Arsenal, where he played for four seasons between 2014 and 2018.

During his time in north London, the Colombian goalkeeper was part of the squad that enjoyed domestic cup success. However, he frequently played second fiddle to Petr Cech, who was Arsenal's first-choice goalkeeper during that period.

Following his departure from the Emirates Stadium, Ospina joined Napoli in 2018. He remained in Italy until 2022 before moving to Saudi Arabia to represent Al-Nassr.

The former Arsenal player stayed with the Saudi Arabian club until 2024 before eventually joining Mexican side Atlante.

His retirement announcement brings an end to an impressive playing career that saw him represent several clubs across different leagues. Although he has not revealed his immediate plans after leaving professional football, his message suggests he is ready to embrace the next chapter of his life.
