According to a report by Football London published on Thursday, October 22, 2026, former Arsenal winger Anders Limpar has urged manager Mikel Arteta to consider playing Viktor Gyokeres alongside another striker, arguing that the Swedish international performs better in a two-forward system.
Limpar believes Arsenal could improve their attacking effectiveness by adjusting their usual formation, which generally relies on a single central striker supported by wingers. He suggested that changing the system could help Gyokeres use his strengths more effectively and contribute more consistently to the team's attack.
Gyokeres joined Arsenal from Sporting last year as part of efforts to strengthen the club's forward line. However, the Swedish striker has faced challenges establishing himself as a regular starter, with Kai Havertz frequently preferred in the central attacking position.
Since joining the Gunners, Gyokeres has made 64 appearances across all competitions, recording 21 goals and four assists. Despite those contributions, questions have continued about his role in Arteta's tactical setup and whether the team is making the best use of his abilities.
His performance in Arsenal's 2-2 draw against Bayern Munich on Wednesday provided some encouragement, particularly after he combined effectively with Declan Rice, who scored the late equaliser. The display offered a positive talking point ahead of Arsenal's Premier League meeting with Everton on Saturday.
Limpar, who mentored Gyokeres during his formative years at Swedish club Brommapojkarna, believes the striker is more effective when paired with another forward rather than being expected to lead the attack alone.
"When I see Viktor playing for Sweden, he is much better because he’s playing with two up front, and he was brought up in the Swedish system, playing with two forwards," the former Arsenal winger told Betarades.
He added, "Playing up front on his own is hard for him because it’s not his game to be a target player."
Limpar explained that Gyokeres is particularly dangerous when making forward runs, chasing loose balls and exploiting counterattacking opportunities. He believes a stronger target striker alongside him could create more space and allow him to threaten opposition defences.
"He is good going forward, chasing the ball, and he’s a threat on counterattacks, so he needs a player who is a really good target so he can play off them," he added.
The former Arsenal player also backed Gyokeres to receive more opportunities in the starting lineup.
"If you ask me if I want him to play, then yes, I think he should play as a starter," Limpar said.
However, he acknowledged that Arteta has access to information about players' fitness and training performances that supporters may not see.
"Arteta is playing Kai Havertz at the moment because he thinks Kai Havertz is better for Arsenal at the moment, and Viktor will have to wait for his chance and take it when it comes," Limpar concluded.
