Nigeria's U-17 women's national team, the Flamingos, have set a new record at the FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup by becoming the first team in the competition's history to have five different players win the Player of the Match award in a single tournament.
The achievement came after Nigeria defeated Brazil 3-1 in the semi-final to reach the final for the first time in their history. The victory added to the team's impressive run, which has seen them produce strong performances against some of the best teams in the competition.
According to a report by ESPN, the record shows the quality and depth of the Nigerian squad, as different players have stepped up and made important contributions throughout the tournament.
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi was the first Nigerian player to win the award after helping the Flamingos defeat Puerto Rico 2-0. Kanyinsola Yusuf followed after Nigeria recorded an impressive 3-1 victory over defending champions North Korea.
Oluebube Umejiaku became the third player to receive the award following her excellent display against Mexico in the Round of 16. Nigeria won the match 2-1, with Umejiaku also getting on the scoresheet to help her team reach the quarter-finals.
Favour Nkwocha was the fourth player to earn the recognition after helping Nigeria secure a narrow 1-0 win over Venezuela in the quarter-final. The victory booked the Flamingos a place in the semi-final and brought them closer to reaching the final.
Awawu Bashiru completed the list after an outstanding performance against Brazil. The forward scored two goals in the second half to help Nigeria secure a 3-1 victory and make history by reaching the final for the first time.
The record has attracted attention and highlighted the strength of the Nigerian team. Having five different players win the individual award shows that the Flamingos have several players capable of making a difference rather than depending on one star player.
Nigeria will now prepare for the final, where they are set to face Japan. The Flamingos will hope to continue their impressive performance, defeat their opponents and win their first-ever FIFA U-17 Women's World Cup title.
