Nigeria’s Flamingos Crowned U-17 Women’s World Cup Champions

According to a report by Vanguard Newspapers on Saturday, November 7, 2026, Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have made history by defeating Japan 2-1 to win the 2026 FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The Nigerian girls produced an impressive performance in the final at the Mohammed VI Football Complex in Rabat to secure their first-ever title in the competition and become the first African nation to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup.

Awawu Bashiru opened the scoring for Nigeria in the 39th minute with a long-range effort that caught the Japanese goalkeeper off guard. The goal gave the Flamingos a deserved advantage heading into the halftime break.

Nigeria continued their impressive display after the restart, with Oluebube Umejiaku doubling the lead in the 47th minute. The forward showed great composure to finish the opportunity and put the Nigerian team in a comfortable position.

Japan refused to give up and managed to reduce the deficit through Fuki Ito in the 80th minute. However, the Flamingos remained determined and defended their advantage until the final whistle to secure the historic victory.

The triumph represents a major achievement for Nigerian football and African women's football, as the Flamingos have brought the prestigious trophy to the continent for the first time.

Nigeria's journey to the final was also remarkable. Despite suffering a 2-1 defeat to Poland in their opening group match, the team recovered strongly, defeating several opponents, including defending champions North Korea and Brazil, on their way to the final.

The victory over Japan has further established Nigeria's reputation as a major force in youth football and given millions of Nigerians another reason to celebrate.

The Flamingos have now written their names in history, delivering a memorable achievement for the country and the entire African continent.
