According to a report published by Madrid Universal on Friday, October 23, 2026, the Dutch former international believes Jose Mourinho's side possess the discipline and determination needed to secure victory against their fierce rivals.

Speaking to Winwin, as reported by AS, Van der Vaart explained that Real Madrid could take advantage of Barcelona's vulnerability when they lose possession while committing players forward. He believes the visitors' counter-attacking ability could prove decisive during the encounter.

"I expect Real Madrid to win the match. Although Barcelona are playing well, I think Real Madrid can exploit Barcelona's loss of possession very effectively through counter-attacks. I believe they will punish Barcelona," he said.

Van der Vaart also praised the mentality Mourinho has established within the Real Madrid squad. According to the former midfielder, the players' commitment to their manager has improved their competitive spirit and strengthened their determination to achieve positive results in important matches.

He further highlighted Mourinho's tactical discipline, pointing to the team's organisation and willingness to follow instructions. Van der Vaart suggested that playing attractive football is not always necessary when a team consistently delivers results and demonstrates the ability to win challenging encounters.

Despite Barcelona's recent 4-2 defeat to Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League, Van der Vaart does not expect the result to have a major negative impact on their El Clasico performance. He believes Barcelona have enough experience and home advantage to respond positively against their Spanish rivals.

The former Real Madrid midfielder also shared his expectations regarding Mourinho's team selection. He predicted that the Portuguese coach would maintain continuity rather than make significant changes to his starting lineup, potentially retaining much of the team that defeated Leipzig.

Beyond the highly anticipated clash, Van der Vaart expressed his support for Kylian Mbappe to win the Ballon d'Or. He described the French forward as the best player in the world at present, praising his consistency and outstanding performances.

He also pointed to Mbappe's displays at the 2026 World Cup as an important factor that could strengthen the forward's chances of claiming football's prestigious individual award.
