Chelsea youngster Jesse Derry recorded his first professional goal contribution for Sporting Lisbon after providing an assist in their 2-1 victory over Maritimo in the Portuguese League Cup quarter-finals on Tuesday night.
According to a report by The Athletic on Wednesday, 28 October 2026, the 19-year-old delivered an impressive performance as Sporting secured their place in the semi-finals, where they will face either Braga or Famalicao.
Derry joined Sporting on loan from Chelsea but has struggled to establish himself in Portugal, failing to start a competitive match before Tuesday’s encounter. However, he was handed his first start against Maritimo and made the opportunity count.
The Chelsea academy graduate played for 73 minutes and helped Sporting break the deadlock with an in-swinging corner that found Pedro Lima.
The Brazilian midfielder powered a header into the net to give his side the advantage before adding another goal to complete his brace.
Sporting eventually secured a 2-1 victory, with Derry playing an important role in their progression to the next round.
The teenager expressed his delight after the match, highlighting his first start, first assist and the team’s victory as significant moments in his Sporting career.
Derry had shown promise during pre-season, impressing in his first appearance against Celtic before scoring against Monaco.
However, regular opportunities have been limited since his loan move, with the winger struggling to secure a consistent place in manager Rui Borges’ plans.
His loan spell was expected to help fill the gap left by Geovany Quenda, but Derry has found competition for places difficult to overcome.
Portuguese media outlets praised his display against Maritimo, with Dia De Jogo reportedly awarding him a rating of 7.4.
The assessment highlighted his assist, successful dribbles, duels won and contribution to attacking moves.
The performance could give Derry a timely boost as he attempts to earn more minutes in the coming weeks.
Sporting face Casa Pia on Friday, providing another opportunity for the Chelsea loanee to build on his latest showing.
