Paul Scholes has launched a scathing attack on Bruno Fernandes, claiming the Manchester United captain has damaged his credibility with managers following his public criticism of Michael Carrick’s tactics.
According to a report by Metro on Tuesday, October 27, 2026, the former United midfielder believes Fernandes’ recent comments could have serious consequences for his reputation and questioned whether other managers would trust him in a leadership role.
Scholes was particularly unhappy with the Portuguese international’s decision to speak publicly about the team’s tactical approach following United’s disappointing 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como in Italy.
Reacting to the controversy, Scholes suggested that Fernandes had crossed a line by openly questioning the manager’s decisions.
“What Bruno Fernandes said last week, I think that’s unforgivable. How can Bruno Fernandes be trusted to be captain of any team he ever goes to now? I think he probably needs to get away from European football and just go to Saudi, just get out the way. I don’t think any manager, any member of staff can trust him after that.”
Fernandes had expressed frustration with United’s approach against Como, questioning why the team failed to press their opponents individually during the encounter.
His remarks reportedly created tension between the midfielder and Carrick’s coaching staff. The situation appeared to have consequences when Fernandes was left out of the starting line-up for Sunday’s Premier League match against Bournemouth.
The United captain remained on the substitutes’ bench throughout the contest, even as his teammates struggled and eventually suffered a disappointing 3-0 defeat at Old Trafford.
Scholes’ criticism reflects the concerns surrounding Fernandes’ conduct, particularly given his responsibilities as club captain. The midfielder is expected to provide leadership and support the manager, especially during difficult periods.
Meanwhile, United’s problems continue to grow, with the club now enduring an eight-match winless run across all competitions. Carrick is under increasing pressure as he prepares his squad for Saturday’s Premier League meeting with Chelsea.
Fernandes’ role will be closely monitored in the coming days, with questions remaining over his relationship with the manager and whether he will return to the starting line-up.
The midfielder will hope to put the controversy behind him and help United rediscover their form, but the criticism from Scholes has added another dimension to the growing uncertainty at Old Trafford.
