Manchester United and Liverpool are reportedly among several Premier League clubs interested in signing AC Milan defender Koni de Winter when the January transfer window opens.
According to a report by Manchester Evening News on Sunday, November 8, 2026, the two English clubs could compete for the Belgian international’s signature as interest in his services continues to grow.
Manchester United have already begun drawing up their recruitment plans for the winter transfer window, with defensive reinforcements and a new striker identified as important areas to strengthen.
The Red Devils have recently been linked with attacking targets such as Ivan Toney and Vitor Roque, while several defenders have also emerged on their shortlist.
Rayan Ait-Nouri has repeatedly been mentioned as a potential target, with RB Leipzig’s David Raum and Eintracht Frankfurt’s Nnamdi Collins also reportedly attracting interest from United’s recruitment team.
However, attention has now turned to De Winter, with CaughtOffside reporting that Manchester United, Liverpool and Chelsea are all monitoring the AC Milan defender.
The report also claims that Newcastle United, Tottenham Hotspur, Leeds United and Brentford have sent scouts to watch his performances, suggesting that competition for his signature could become intense.
De Winter mainly operates as a centre-back and has made 14 appearances for AC Milan in all competitions this season. His regular involvement under Ruben Amorim has further enhanced his reputation.
Manchester United previously considered signing the defender in 2025 before he eventually moved to Milan. However, their renewed interest could face challenges given the number of clubs now following his progress.
United’s defensive performances have also come under scrutiny this season, with Carrick’s side reportedly conceding 12 goals in their previous five matches. Improving the backline is therefore expected to remain an important part of their January recruitment plans.
Although left-back is another position the club may need to address, United are yet to decide whether to prioritise that area or focus on signing a central defender following their unsuccessful pursuit of a left-back during the summer window.
With the transfer race still at an early stage, Manchester United are not expected to make an immediate decision on De Winter. The club will continue evaluating their defensive options before determining whether to make a formal move for the Belgian.
