Portugal head coach Jorge Jesus has revealed he asked Cristiano Ronaldo to continue with the national team before the 41-year-old announced his retirement.
Jesus stated this while reacting to Ronaldo's retirement from the Portugal national team.
He also admitted he has no choice but to accept the Al-Nassr forward's decision to retire from international football.
Recall that Ronaldo confirmed the end of his Portugal career on Thursday after 23 years, having made his debut in 2003.
Reacting, Jesus gave his first public response to Canal 11, with his comments relayed by Fabrizio Romano.
“Cristiano is a global icon, an example for Portugal and the national team," Jesus said.
“I asked him to continue with me because I needed him by my side. But I have to accept his decision. He will always have a place in the hearts of the Portuguese people.”
