Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes and head coach Michael Carrick have appeared to disagree over the team’s tactical approach following their 4-1 defeat to Como in the UEFA Champions League.
The defeat has intensified scrutiny of Carrick, with the United manager facing questions over his tactical decisions after a disappointing performance that left travelling supporters frustrated.
The apparent disagreement emerged after Fernandes questioned the coaching staff’s decision not to press Como aggressively, while Carrick stressed that players must demonstrate sufficient commitment and work rate regardless of the tactical system employed.
Fernandes questions tactical approach
Speaking to TNT Sports on Wednesday after the match, Fernandes said United’s approach allowed Como to gain confidence and control possession.
“It’s a decision from the staff to not press man to man and sometimes leave space behind and try to get the ball, but sometimes when you give too much the ball to these teams they get confidence,” the Portuguese midfielder said.
Asked directly whether Carrick had got his tactics wrong, Fernandes declined to make a direct accusation but said responsibility for the team’s approach rested with the coaching staff.
“That’s on the manager and staff to see it, not me. Sometimes you have to be more brave under pressure, take the risk of pressing high and making them uncomfortable,” he added.
Fernandes’ comments suggested that he believed United needed to adopt a more aggressive pressing strategy to disrupt Como’s build-up play and prevent their opponents from settling into the match.
The captain’s remarks have attracted attention because of his leadership position and influence within the squad, particularly as the club faces renewed questions about its performances.
Carrick stresses players’ commitment
Responding to the criticism during his post-match press conference, Carrick emphasised that tactical instructions alone could not guarantee success without the necessary effort from the players.
“There’s a little bit of whatever system you play, whatever tactics you play, if you don’t run, and you don’t run forward, and you don’t run back, you aren’t going to win,” the United manager said.
Although Carrick did not mention Fernandes by name, his response placed emphasis on the players’ intensity and their responsibility to execute the game plan.
The contrasting remarks highlighted different perspectives on United’s performance, with Fernandes focusing on the need for more aggressive pressing and Carrick stressing the importance of commitment regardless of the system adopted.
However, neither man explicitly confirmed that a personal dispute had developed between them.
Defeat increases pressure on United boss
The 4-1 loss has raised further questions about United’s tactical direction and Carrick’s ability to improve the team’s performances.
Carrick apologised to the 700 Manchester United supporters who travelled to watch the match, acknowledging their disappointment after the heavy defeat.
His reaction after the final whistle, when he crossed the pitch and repeatedly raised his hands towards the supporters, also attracted attention.
The gesture drew comparisons with former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s reaction following the club’s 4-1 defeat to Watford in November 2021, a result that preceded his dismissal the following day.
The comparison has added to the discussion surrounding Carrick’s position, although the circumstances of the two defeats do not establish that they will have the same consequences.
Focus shifts to United’s response
The exchange between Fernandes and Carrick has intensified discussions about the relationship between the United captain and his manager, as well as the degree of agreement within the squad over the team’s tactical approach.
Fernandes did not call for Carrick’s dismissal, while the manager did not directly accuse his captain of undermining his authority.
Nevertheless, the contrasting assessments have placed renewed focus on the need for United to improve their pressing, defensive organisation and overall intensity.
Carrick now faces the task of restoring confidence, addressing the weaknesses exposed by the defeat and ensuring that the players respond positively in subsequent fixtures.
The team’s performances in the coming matches will be closely watched as Manchester United seek to recover from the setback and answer questions about their tactical direction.
