According to a report by FootballTransfers on Thursday, October 22, 2026, Manchester United are reportedly reluctant to appoint Antonio Conte as their next manager because of concerns that the Italian’s methods may not align with the club’s preferred organisational structure.
The uncertainty surrounding United’s managerial position has intensified following their disappointing 4-1 Champions League defeat to Como, a result that reportedly left the club with just two victories from their opening 11 matches across all competitions this season.
Michael Carrick has come under increasing pressure following the team’s poor results, with further scrutiny directed at his response to captain Bruno Fernandes’ recent comments questioning the club’s current direction.
Despite the growing criticism, reports suggest that some influential figures at Old Trafford continue to support Carrick. However, his position could depend on how Manchester United perform against Bournemouth in their upcoming Premier League fixture.
Conte, who previously managed Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur, is reportedly available after leaving Napoli at the end of the season. The Italian is said to be interested in the possibility of taking charge at Old Trafford should the opportunity arise.
However, concerns over his suitability for United’s long-term plans could complicate any potential appointment. The club’s leadership is understood to favour an organisational structure that gives senior executives a significant role in shaping recruitment and the broader football strategy.
Another name reportedly under consideration is Julian Nagelsmann. The German coach has also been linked with a possible return to club management after his spell in charge of the national team.
Brighton manager Fabian Hurzeler and Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe have also emerged among the names being discussed as Manchester United assess their options.
Meanwhile, Unai Emery is reportedly held in high regard by figures at Old Trafford because of his work at Aston Villa. His managerial experience and achievements have reportedly made him another candidate worth considering as the club evaluates its future direction.
For now, Carrick remains focused on preparing his team for the Bournemouth match, which comes at a difficult moment in United’s campaign. A positive result would provide an opportunity to ease some of the pressure following their European setback.
Speaking after the defeat to Como, Carrick made no attempt to hide his frustration with the team’s performance.
“I’m extremely let down,” Carrick said. “I am incredibly irritated. Truthfully, I’m quite enraged.”
He added: “But you’ve got to move on, you’ve got to deal with what’s next and see what that looks like.”
With uncertainty surrounding both the team’s performances and its managerial future, Manchester United face an important period as the club attempts to recover from its difficult start to the season.
