Nigeria’s U‑17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, have made history after defeating Japan 2–1 on November 7, 2026, to win the 2026 FIFA U‑17 Women’s World Cup in Morocco.

The victory makes Nigeria the first African country to win the tournament since it began in 2008.
Awawu Bashiru put Nigeria ahead in the 39th minute, and Oluebube Umejiaku doubled the lead two minutes into the second half. Japan pulled one back in the 80th minute through Fuki Ito, but the Flamingos held firm until the final whistle to lift the trophy.
Umejiaku was named Player of the Match and also won the tournament’s Golden Ball for her outstanding performances.
