Flamingos dispatch Brazil to reach historic U-17 World Cup final
Oluwakemi Adegbuyi celebrates after opening scoring for the Flamingos of Nigeria against Brazil

The Flamingos produced three second-half goals to record a well-deserved semi-final victory over Brazil on Wednesday to reach their first-ever FIFA U-17 World Cup final in Morocco.

The Hakeem Busari tutored girls will contest the final on Saturday, November 7, 2026 against Japan who secured an epic comeback victory over DPR Korea in the first semi-final match.

The Flamingos dominated first-half proceedings with Queen Joseph, Mary Dunstan and Oluwakemi Adegbuyi all coming close.

That relentless pace towards the Seleção net only ramped up after the break, and Nigeria eventually broke through when Adegbuyi cut in from the right and scuffed a shot into the path of Joseph who side-footed home.

Awawu Bashiru then doubled the advantage when her cross flew over everyone, including Nathy in the Brazil goal, and nestled in the bottom corner.

If that goal was somewhat fortuitous, there was nothing lucky about her second. A flowing Nigeria move reached the No11, who side-stepped one Brazil defender and poked the ball into the bottom corner.

Greise Kelly reduced the deficit with a late header, but it was too little, too late for last year’s fourth-placed side.

Earlier in the day, DPR Korea were just seconds away from reaching a third consecutive U-17 Women’s World Cup final but Japan pulled off a last-gasp comeback to deliver an epic knockout blow to the two-time defending champions.

The title holders dominated the match from start to finish and took a deserved lead thanks to Ri Ui-gyong’s inch-perfect half-volley midway through the second half.

Japan, though, did not give up and managed to equalise deep into injury time after Won Sol-gyong put the ball in her own net under pressure from the opposition.

With the momentum on their side, Japan were perfect from the spot. After Eh Chong-gum had her effort saved by Kou Kadowaki and then Kim Ju-gyong rattled the post, it was up to Asuka Tanaka to seal victory for Japan.

Tanaka coolly slotted the ball into the net to seal Japan’s return to the U-17 final for the first time since 2016 and cause one of the biggest upsets in recent tournament history.
