Dimitar Berbatov suggests the writing is on the wall for Michael Carrick following Manchester United’s embarrassing defeat to Como.
The Red Devils landed in Italy on the back of a six-match winless run. So while the team was desperate for a revitalising result, they ended up suffering their worst defeat under Carrick, as Cesc Fabregas’ men ran circles around them en route to a 4-1 victory.
Nico Paz was the ultimate star of the show with a brace and an assist, while Joshua Zirkzee’s late consolation goal changed little in the narrative.
Dimitar Berbatov blasts ‘terrible’ Man Utd
This defeat will pile more pressure on Carrick, who has been walking on increasingly thin ice for weeks.
To make matters even worse for the under-fire coach, his tactics were publicly questioned by his captain Bruno Fernandes, who suggested that United played into Como’s favour by not pressing them, prompting a swift reply from the Englishman.
Therefore, many believe the 45-year-old manager wouldn’t be able to survive the storm, and one of them happens to be a former teammate.
After the game, Berbatov roasted Man Utd’s ‘terrible’ display by comparing them to a reserve team. The Bulgarian believes Carrick won’t be able to turn things around.
“It was a terrible, terrible night and a terrible game for Manchester United,” said the retired striker during his appearance on TNT Sports (via Metro).
“Como outplayed them in every way possible. It was like they were playing a reserve team, almost.
“Are these the players who can compete for a club like Manchester United? Is it the right manager? Those questions will be asked after this kind of performance,” added Berbatov”
Will Michael Carrick survive the storm?
As Berbatov points out, Carrick has seemingly lost the plot. He may have already reached the point of no return.
Perhaps he won’t even be given the chance to rebound after such a miserable performance, as a Thursday-morning sacking cannot be ruled out.
And yet, Carrick might be the least of United’s problems. After all, the toxic atmosphere at the club has long preceded the 45-year-old’s reign.
Lisandro Martinez perhaps made an ill-advised decision by calling out the hierarchy, but his words carried important facts, as Man Utd’s issues start at the very top of the pyramid.
