The House of Representatives warmly congratulates Nigeria’s National U-17 Female Team, the Flamingos, on their historic triumph at the 10th edition of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026, following their 2–1 victory over Japan in Saturday’s final in Rabat, Morocco.
The victory marks Nigeria’s first-ever FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup title and Africa’s first in the competition. It also makes Nigeria the first African country to win the FIFA U-17 World Cup in both the male and female categories
Under Head Coach, Hakeem Busari, the Flamingos demonstrated remarkable resilience, recovering from an opening-match defeat to win the global title.
The team’s achievement builds on its regional dominance, having won the 2026 WAFU-B U-17 Girls Cup in Côte d’Ivoire with a perfect record of five wins from five matches. At the World Cup, five different players earned Player of the Match awards across the team’s games, with all five drawn from Nigeria’s domestic league system. Oluebube Umejiaku also won the adidas Golden Ball as the tournament’s Most Valuable Player, capping her performance with the winning goal in the final.
This was contained in a statement on Sunday by Rep. Akin Rotimi, Jr., Spokesman, House of Representatives,.
The Speaker of the House of Representatives, Rt. Hon. Abbas Tajudeen, described the victory as a testament to Nigeria’s resilient spirit, invoking the popular expression, “Naija no dey carry last.” He noted that the average Nigerian is born to break barriers and conquer territories.
“The House of Representatives is proud of the record-breaking feat of the female national team, as Nigerians have another reason to celebrate the country. I commend the Flamingos, the management and the crew for being patriotic to Nigeria and good ambassadors of the country on the global stage,” the Speaker stated.
Speaker Abbas urged the Federal Government to honour the team, emphasising the importance of recognising and rewarding young Nigerians whose achievements bring pride to the nation.
The House celebrates the Flamingos, and wishes them continued success.
