Nigeria’s Flamingos Make History with FIFA U-17 World Cup Victory as President Tinubu Hails Triumph
Nigeria’s under-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, achieved a historic milestone on Saturday night in Rabat, Morocco, defeating Japan 2-1 in the final to become the first African nation to lift the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup trophy.
Goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku secured the decisive victory, capping off an impressive tournament campaign marked by teamwork and resilience.
President Bola Ahmed Tinubu welcomed the news upon returning from campaign engagements in Akwa Ibom and Rivers States, describing the achievement as a defining moment for both Nigerian sports and African women’s football. He commended the team for keeping the promise they made to bring the trophy home following their hard-fought semi-final win.
In his statement, President Tinubu praised the squad’s discipline and determination throughout the competition, noting that their success serves as a powerful inspiration for young girls across the country. He extended congratulations to the players, the coaching staff, the Nigeria Football Federation, and the National Sports Commission for their roles in preparing and guiding the team.
The president also reiterated his administration’s intention to continue supporting grassroots sports development to ensure young Nigerians, particularly young women, have the platforms needed to excel on the global stage.
