Nigeria’s U-17 women’s national team, the Flamingos, made history by advancing to the final of the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup with a remarkable 3-1 victory over Brazil in Wednesday’s semi-final.

This achievement marks the first time an African team has reached the final of the tournament, which is being hosted by Morocco.

The Flamingos delivered an outstanding second-half display, scoring three consecutive goals before Brazil netted a late consolation. After a goalless first half, Queen Joseph opened the scoring in the 56th minute, finishing off a pass from Omowunmi Adegbuyi.

Nigeria doubled their lead in the 71st minute as Amina Bashiru converted a move initiated by Joseph, putting the team firmly in command. Bashiru struck again in the 80th minute, completing her brace with assistance from O.

Umejiaku to make it 3-0. Brazil’s Greise Kelly pulled one back in the 89th minute, but it was not enough to alter the result.

The Flamingos’ dominance was evident in the statistics: they registered 41 attempts on goal to Brazil’s eight, created five big chances compared to none for their opponents, and tallied 65 touches in the opposition box against Brazil’s 11.

While Brazil held 58 percent possession, Nigeria proved far more dangerous in attack.

With this memorable victory, the Flamingos not only secured their place in the final but also set a new milestone for Nigerian women’s football at the youth level. They will face Japan in the championship match.
