Nigeria lifts first U-17 women’s world cup title

Nigeria’s Flamingos have etched their names into footballing history, becoming the first-ever African team to win the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup after a thrilling – victory over Japan in Saturday’s grand finale.

Goals from Awawu Bashiru and Oluebube Umejiaku built an unassailable lead for the Nigerian youngsters, capping off an extraordinary tournament campaign defined by resilience, tactical brilliance, and sheer determination.

The Flamingos set the tempo early in Rabat, breaking the deadlock in the 39th minute. Midfielder Awawu Bashiru sent a long, looping attempt toward the Japanese goal off an assist from Mary Dunstan.

Japan goalkeeper Kou Kadowaki misjudged the flight of the dropping ball, letting it slip through her gloves and into the back of the net to give Nigeria a deserved 1–0 lead going into the break.

Nigeria wasted no time doubling their advantage after the restart. Just two minutes into the second half, Esther Stephen picked out Oluebube Umejiaku with a raking pass upfield.

Umejiaku brought the ball down expertly with her left foot before delicately lifting a chip over the stranded Kadowaki to make it 2–0 in the 47th minute.

Japan mounted a fierce late comeback attempt, pulling a goal back in the 80th minute when Fuki Ito finished off a pass from Anri Ito.

The final 10 minutes plus five minutes of stoppage time saw intense pressure from the Asian powerhouse, but Nigeria’s defensive line—led by key interventions under heavy pressure—held firm until the final whistle sparked ecstatic celebrations across the pitch.

The historic triumph caps a stunning bounce-back by coach Akeem Busari’s squad. After opening their tournament with a disappointing 2–1 loss to Poland, the Flamingos rallied to win five consecutive matches on their path to glory.

Addressing reporters after the match, head coach Busari credited the team’s sports psychology guidance and renewed tactical confidence for turning their campaign around after the opening match setback.

Captain Harmony Chidi described lifting the trophy as a moment that “will never be forgotten” by the team or the nation.

The World Cup crown adds to an incredible year for the Flamingos, who arrived in Morocco as undefeated WAFU-B U-17 Champions after scoring 17 goals and conceding just once in Côte d’Ivoire earlier this year.
