Former Nigerian football stars from the celebrated 1994 and 1996 Super Eagles generations are set to reunite with other African football legends for an exhibition match in Lagos on Sunday, November 8.
The Legends Football Game will take place at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, Onikan, as part of activities marking 30 years since Nigeria’s historic Africa Cup of Nations triumph and Olympic football gold medal victory.
Leading the Nigerian contingent are former internationals Austin Jay-Jay Okocha, Nwankwo Kanu, Daniel Amokachi, Finidi George, Victor Ikpeba, Mutiu Adepoju, Garba Lawal and Taribo West.
They will face a star-studded African Legends side featuring former African Footballer of the Year Emmanuel Adebayor, Senegal’s El-Hadji Diouf, Ghana’s Stephen Appiah, Ivory Coast’s Didier Zokora and Cameroon’s Rigobert Song, among others.
The event is organised by Toptier Sports Management in partnership with the African Export-Import Bank (Afreximbank) and its Creative Africa Nexus (CANEX) programme.
Beyond the exhibition match, the programme will include a football camp involving 500 young players, entertainment performances and a special presentation to honour members of Nigeria’s historic teams.
Our correspondent reports that Nigeria won the 1994 AFCON title in Tunisia before making its first FIFA World Cup appearance that same year. The country went on to claim its first Olympic football gold medal at the 1996 Atlanta Games after defeating Brazil and Argentina in the semi-finals and final, respectively.
The match will be broadcast live on NTA, AIT and Silverbird Television between 5pm and 7pm.
