Former Morocco international Mustapha El Haddaoui believes Lamine Yamal is the leading contender for the 2026 Ballon d’Or, although he hopes Achraf Hakimi can win the prestigious individual award.
Speaking exclusively to Maghreb-Foot, El Haddaoui said Hakimi’s regular inclusion among the nominees reflected both his consistency and exceptional ability. The Paris Saint-Germain right-back, who captains the Lions de l’Atlas, was described by El Haddaoui as the best player in the world in his position.
El Haddaoui nevertheless expects Hakimi to face a difficult challenge in the voting. He noted that attacking players who have won major trophies often hold an advantage with the jury, making it harder for a defender to claim the prize.
Despite that, the former Morocco midfielder believes Hakimi merits a place among the leading contenders and predicts that his compatriot will finish in the top six.
El Haddaoui’s choice at the head of the field is Yamal. The former Lions de l’Atlas player has been impressed by the teenager’s performances for FC Barcelona and Spain, as well as the influence he has had on matches.
He places Yamal ahead of other leading international stars who have also made a strong impression in recent years.
El Haddaoui won 90 caps for Morocco between 1983 and 1994. His assessment comes as the race for the 2026 Ballon d’Or begins to take shape, with the ceremony scheduled to take place in London on 26 October 2026.
