The likes of Barcelona, Real Madrid, Manchester City and Bayern Munich have recorded extraordinary points tallies over the years, but completing an entire league campaign without defeat remains one of football’s greatest achievements.

As the 2026-27 season gathers momentum, seven teams across three of Europe’s major leagues remain unbeaten domestically, raising the prospect of an Invincibles campaign.

Interestingly, none of the unbeaten sides come from Ligue 1 or the Premier League, with Italy’s Serie A, Spain’s La Liga and Germany’s Bundesliga providing the remaining contenders.

Here, we look at the seven teams still dreaming of an unbeaten league season and assess their chances of making history, as reported by Planet Football on Sunday.

Inter

Reigning Serie A champions Inter have made an impressive start to their title defence under Cristian Chivu, winning six of their opening seven league matches.

The Nerazzurri have been particularly entertaining going forward, scoring 21 goals in their opening fixtures. However, their nine goals conceded suggest there is still room for improvement defensively.

Inter’s domestic form has contrasted with a less convincing start in Europe, where defeats to Real Madrid and Club Brugge exposed some vulnerabilities before a narrow victory over Shakhtar Donetsk offered encouragement.

Chivu’s side have the attacking quality and experience to sustain a title challenge, but tightening up at the back will be essential if they are to maintain their unbeaten domestic record throughout the season.

Roma

Roma have not won Serie A since 2001-02, when Fabio Capello led them to their third Scudetto.

Claudio Ranieri came close to ending that drought in 2009-10, pushing Jose Mourinho’s treble-winning Inter all the way before finishing second.

Now, Gian Piero Gasperini has the opportunity to bring another title challenge to the Italian capital.

The experienced coach earned widespread admiration for his work at Atalanta, where he developed an exciting, attack-minded side and guided the club to Europa League glory. However, a Serie A title remains missing from his personal honours.

Roma have made a promising start to the campaign, although surrendering two-goal leads against Inter and Real Madrid has raised questions about their ability to maintain control in difficult moments.

Their unbeaten run provides a solid foundation, but greater defensive resilience will be required if they are to challenge for the Scudetto and keep their Invincibles dream alive.

Lazio

Lazio have emerged as one of the early surprises of the season under Gennaro Gattuso.

After a difficult spell in charge of Italy, the former midfielder appears to have found a fresh opportunity to rebuild his reputation in club football.

Lazio won all their pre-season friendlies and have carried that momentum into the new campaign, claiming six victories from their opening seven Serie A matches.

Their most impressive result so far was a stunning 3-0 away victory over Juventus, a performance that underlined their potential to compete with Italy’s established heavyweights.

Maintaining that level over an entire season will be a considerable challenge, but Lazio have given their supporters plenty of reasons to believe that they could be one of the campaign’s most exciting stories.

AC Milan

Ruben Amorim’s appointment at AC Milan represents another opportunity for a manager seeking to rebuild his reputation after a difficult spell at Manchester United.

Milan have remained unbeaten domestically, although three draws in their opening seven league matches indicate that there is still work to be done.

Their performances have offered encouraging signs, but consistency remains a key concern if they are to challenge for the Serie A title.

A disappointing 3-0 Europa League defeat to Bournemouth also served as a reminder that Amorim’s side are still a work in progress.

Milan possess the history and ambition to compete at the highest level, but remaining unbeaten for an entire campaign requires more than avoiding defeat in the early weeks. They will need to turn draws into victories and develop the consistency of genuine title contenders.

Barcelona

Barcelona are among the most intriguing candidates to complete an unbeaten domestic campaign.

Their perfect start across all competitions came to an end following a 4-2 Champions League defeat away to Paris Saint-Germain, but their domestic record remains intact.

The reigning Spanish heavyweights have the attacking quality, technical ability and experience to put together a remarkable league season under their current project.

However, El Clasico against Real Madrid represents a major test of their credentials. A positive result would provide a significant boost to their confidence and strengthen their position in the title race.

Barcelona have previously demonstrated their ability to dominate Spanish football, but completing an entire league season without defeat would require sustained excellence, particularly against their fiercest rivals and the division’s strongest challengers.

If they maintain their current domestic form, the Catalan club could be on course to challenge several historic records in 2026-27.

Bayern Munich

Bayern Munich’s continued presence among the unbeaten teams will surprise few observers.

The perennial Bundesliga champions have built a reputation for domestic dominance, and their early-season performances suggest they remain capable of overwhelming opponents.

There have been occasional signs of vulnerability, including a goalless draw against Schalke and a stalemate with Augsburg. However, their attacking displays have been devastating when everything clicks.

Bayern have scored seven goals against Union Berlin and six against RB Leipzig, demonstrating the firepower available to Vincent Kompany.

Their ability to overwhelm teams makes them one of the strongest candidates to maintain an unbeaten league record, although defensive concentration will be vital when they encounter opponents capable of exploiting their weaknesses.

With Kompany overseeing the project, Bayern will be determined to extend their domestic dominance and potentially achieve something that has eluded even some of the greatest teams in European football.

Borussia Dortmund

Borussia Dortmund continue to search for the consistency required to end Bayern Munich’s long-standing dominance of German football.

Their last Bundesliga title came under Jurgen Klopp in 2011-12, and supporters have spent several seasons hoping for another sustained challenge.

Dortmund initially looked capable of mounting a serious bid this term after winning four consecutive matches. However, successive draws have slowed their momentum and allowed Bayern to move ahead of them.

Although they remain unbeaten, those dropped points illustrate the difference between avoiding defeat and winning a championship.

Dortmund have the talent to challenge the Bundesliga’s leading sides, but they must find a way to turn draws into victories if they are to keep pace with Bayern.

Their unbeaten record remains encouraging, yet history suggests that consistency over the full campaign will determine whether they can finally mount a genuine title challenge.
