Manchester United manager Michael Carrick has apologised to the club's supporters following a disappointing 4–1 defeat against Italian side Como in the Champions League.
Carrick spoke openly after the match on Wednesday, October 21, 2026, admitting that his team's performance was unacceptable. He also made it clear that he understood the frustration of fans who had travelled to support the club.
The defeat was another difficult moment for Manchester United, who struggled to compete against Como throughout the match. The Italian side took an early lead through Nico Paz before adding more goals to dominate the game.
Tasos Douvikas and Paz scored further goals for Como, while Jacobo Ramón completed the scoring for the home team. Joshua Zirkzee scored a late consolation goal for Manchester United, but it was not enough to change the result.
Speaking after the match, Carrick said he had to apologise to the supporters because the team had failed to show the energy, aggression and determination expected from Manchester United players.
He explained that losing matches can happen in football, but the manner in which a team performs also matters.
Carrick said he found the performance difficult to watch and accepted responsibility for the team's overall display. He also stressed that representing Manchester United comes with a responsibility to respect the club's history and its supporters.
The manager's comments came as pressure continued to grow over his position following a poor run of results. Some fans have questioned whether he is the right person to lead the club forward.
Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes also raised concerns about the team's tactics after the defeat. He suggested that the players needed to press their opponents more aggressively instead of allowing them too much space.
Carrick responded by saying that no tactical system could succeed if players failed to run, work hard and support one another.
Despite the criticism, the manager insisted that his focus was on preparing the team for its next match against Bournemouth at Old Trafford.
Manchester United now face the challenge of rebuilding confidence and showing a better performance in front of their home supporters.
For Carrick, the message is clear: the club must improve its performance, take responsibility and give its fans a reason to believe again.
