Former Chelsea defender Frank Leboeuf launched a scathing critique against Manchester United captain Bruno Fernandes, challenging the player to cease his incessant talk and complaints.
The 1998 World Cup winner’s harsh reaction to the Portuguese comes after Fernandes conducted a post-match interview in which he publicly questioned manager Michael Carrick’s tactics, claiming the coaching staff instructed the team not to engage in a full man-to-man press.
However, the former Les Blues defender had a different view of the situation, as he launched a scathing critique against the Manchester United captain following United’s 4-1 UEFA Champions League defeat to Como.
He criticised Fernandes’ on-pitch body language and overall commitment, urging him to lead by example rather than deflecting blame.
“For Bruno, we have to stop with that. I see too much of him crying and complaining. Yes, he is a great player, but start running—stop talking, crying, and complaining! Just do your job for the club, for the team, and for the manager. He has been absolutely invisible, and it is astonishing that he is not doing his job.”
The TV pundit similarly argued that if Carrick deployed defensive tactics, it was likely because he recognised the squad’s physical and work-rate limitations.
“Maybe Michael Carrick knows too much about the players and what they’re incapable of doing. It’s why he was maybe a little bit too defensive… Those players, they’re letting him down,” he explained.
The pointed attacks add to his previous criticism of the midfielder, where he accused him of “disappearing” during big games, arguing that while Fernandes possesses undeniable talent, his leadership style and tendency to complain publicly often undermine the team during difficult moments.
It also follows Michael Carrick’s instant reply to Fernandes, as he deflected the assertions that his tactical instructions were squarely to blame for the loss.
Meanwhile, the emerging public feud highlights a total breakdown in leadership alignment at Man United, with a scenario where the club captain openly rejects tactical instructions and shifts accountability entirely to the coaching staff.
Player-versus-manager standoffs are well documented in Premier League history, and Manchester United is no stranger to them, having witnessed similar fallouts under Erik ten Hag with Cristiano Ronaldo and during Ole Gunnar Solskjær’s tenure.
As United prepare to face Bournemouth in Week 8, pressure mounts on Carrick to steady the ship and halt the slide. Whether the manager can unite his dressing room or if this war of words marks the beginning of the end remains the defining question at Old Trafford.
